Sunrise vs Thunderstorm, at the close of Northern Spark 2016. This 360 video is really a photo, taken with surround shot on a S7 Edge. It's 17 seconds long, but it can be paused. Works best in a Gear VR. Click the link below to try it out on our Youtube page.

The Vizlab participated in the Northern Sparks festival for the second year in a row this past weekend. This year Bill Gorcica, Matthew Julius and Mark Gill attended as 'Assorted Artists' within the Sundance.org's New Frontiers in VR. ( http://www.sundance.org/vr ). The project, simRVR, was well received. That wasn't the end though! Shortly after Northern Sparks, the whole thing moved over to The Walker Arts Center where it will run for the next 4 days. It's at different times on different days. Enjoy the exhibit and experience some neat technology.
The Sundance Film Festival is holding its "Virtual Reality: The New Frontier" exhibition at Northern Spark 2016 and the Walker Arts Center this June. At the event there will be a preview of this year's VR submissions, including a VR submission from the visualization lab.
In the video submission, simRVR by Bill Gorcica, Mark Gill, Matt Julius, and Kristian Twombly invites you to witness the growing toxicity of a river and ways that the smallest changes impact the farthest reaches of our food web. It's a CG rendered artistic impression of a microscopic river bed as heavy metal toxins increase. "Virtual Reality: The New Frontier" is an exhibition featuring an international selection of independent virtual reality works. The lineup includes works that played at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier. simRFR will be available for viewing at Northern Spark on June 11 and at the Walker until June 16 Watch the video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGDh4XOHR7w Read more about the festival: https://www.sundance.org/blogs/news/2016-new-frontier-virtual-reality-northern-spark-walker-art-center Written by Brikken Jensen
The university will be awarding 45 scholarships of $12,000 each over the next four years. Apply this August. Open to juniors in STEM majors. Check out the website for more information: Written by Brikken Jensen Each year we hear more and more about 3D printing and it's growing uses. This widely popular technology is used in the automobile industry, aerospace industry, medical industry, and apparently the theatre industry. Yep, 3D printing is applicable on Broadway. As a total theatre geek myself, I was really pleased and a little surprised to learn about this, however, it's a brilliant application. Set designers such as the one in this video can use a small 3D printer to print miniature furniture, staircases, and other set pieces that help them and others to visualize a set before construction. Another reason to check out the video, is that the presenter, Kacie Hultgren, is a founder of the GREAT theatre company in St. Cloud, MN who then went on to Broadway and has now found an interest in 3D printing. Go St. Cloud! written by Brikken Jensen ILMxLab Latest NewsThis December a new Star Wars film hits the box office. If you're a fan of the hugely popular series, or a technology nut such as me, then this new innovation may interest you. LucasFilms and ILM, the 40-year-old special-effects company that brought you Star Wars and Jurrasic Park's first dinosaurs, are teaming up to create "experiential entertainment". Imagine being able to strap on a pair of virtual reality goggles, such as an Oculus Rift, and then interact with a scene of a movie. You could live out the moment with the characters from the film like R2-D2 and C-3PO. This kind of technology could take movies to a whole new level. Chances are you probably have. Well NSF has granted St. Cloud State a large sum of money for the next 4 years to be handed out as scholarships to a variety of students. If you have two years left and are pursuing a degree in Information Assurance, Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering then you may qualify! Be sure to apply! "Applications for a two-year scholarship of up to $12,000 will be accepted Aug. 1-Sept. 10. Select applicants will be interviewed about the middle of September. Scholarships will be funded by a $614,000 grant from NSF, the top federal agency supporting non-medical science and engineering research and education." (from the SCSU website) Last year I applied and received a similar scholarship from NSF as an Information Systems major. It's made a huge difference! In addition to the money, students will have opportunities to reach out to the community, attend conferences (which NSF may pay for), work on projects with other scholarship winners, and complete a research project to be presented at the spring Student Research Colloquium. This may sound like a lot, but it is completely doable and students gain experience and knowledge. Any questions, go ahead and post a comment! http://outlook.stcloudstate.edu/new-scholarships-for-computing-and-engineering-students/
Written by Brikken Jensen Earlier this month a new theme park launched their promotional video online and it's taken off. For those of you gamers out there who haven't heard of "The Void", hold on to you companion cubes, because you're about to lose your cake. No lie. "The Void" , short for "Vision of Infinite Dimensions" will open sometime in 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Check out the video (you'll want to go immediately!) But at what point is something too real? I mean, I'm not sure what it'd be like to come face to face with a "dragon". And be sure to visit their website and sign up for email for more information: http://thevoid.com/ Written by Brikken Jensen Artemis is a multi-player, strategy- based spaceship bridge simulator game. Imagine being on the bridge of the Star Trek Enterprise, it's like that! There are multiple computer stations creating the LAN. Journey through virtual space by battling against enemies, monsters, mine fields, black holes, and more. It's a lot of fun! Check it out for the fall. See the attached presentation and pitch it to your clubs!
We will host our first Visualization Lab Seminar Thursday, November 20th, 2014 in ISELF room 110 @ 5pm-7pm. We will be teaching 3D programming concepts, bring your laptops in order to follow along. Pizza and pop will be provided.
